The first Pulse of the year was a social occasion – a chance for supporters of Bath for Europe to come together and share feelings about the UK’s almost-inevitable legal departure from the EU at the end of this month. About forty gathered in All Bar One last Sunday for a few drinks and plenty of discussion. While it was evident no-one was pleased by the Tories’ substantial majority at the last election, there was a determination to stay resolute and remain ready to campaign should the need arise.
People were keen to focus on supporting our fellow EU citizens who might receive a cold shoulder from the government should questions arise over residency; in the past week this has become an even greater concern as amendments relevant to their settled status have failed to pass. Everyone was keen to hold the government to account should Brexit promises be broken and Leavers’ expectations be unfulfilled. Boris Johnson’s slogan ‘Get Brexit Done’ might have won him votes, but Bath for Europe would be there to remind folks, ‘You are being done by Brexit.’
Our next Pulse of Europe will take place on Sunday, February 2nd from 2pm at the Widcombe Social Club. Details to follow.
