Did you know local councils can also play a key role in helping to persuade the MPs they work with every day to support a People’s Vote? Across the UK, anti-Brexit campaigners are encouraging their local councils to pass motions or resolutions in support of a People’s Vote. Councils who have already done this include Oxford, Hammersmith & Fulham, Cheltenham and just recently Warrington.
The two MPs who serve the BANES area are Wera Hobhouse (Bath, Liberal Democrat) and Jacob Rees Mogg (North East Somerset, Conservative). They may have very different views on Brexit, however this is another excellent opportunity for the people in the BANES area to make their voice heard.
One of Bath’s Liberal Democrat councillors is hoping to get a similar motion tabled at the council meeting on Thursday 8 November. In support of this, Bath for Europe have set up an e-petition at this link.
Please sign this e-petition before Thursday 8 November. Help spread the word to family, friends and colleagues to sign it, too. Only people who live, work or study in BANES can sign so if you don’t live in BANES, use your work or study address when you register to sign the e-petition. You will need to set up a log-in to sign the petition if you don’t already have one.
The council is obliged to debate a petition if over 1% of the population of BANES sign it which would be around 2,000 signatures.
Lastly, please keep the evening of Thursday 8 November free to attend the meeting in the public gallery (or even demonstrate outside!) at the Guildhall in Bath. Watch this space for updates!
