Engaging with the public in Frome

The Frome Brexitometer, August 2018.

Bath for Europe started our outreach programme late last autumn, taking our Saturday street stall and loyal band of volunteers to towns in Wiltshire and Somerset with Tory MPs. We’ve been to Midsomer Norton, Radstock, Keynsham, Bradford-on-Avon, Melksham, Chippenham, Corsham, Warminster and Trowbridge. This past Saturday we visited Frome for the first time where we had many positive conversations with members of the public. Our Bath team was augmented with our local supporters from Frome and the surrounding area. It was an energising and uplifting experience.

Our aim with our “mega street stalls” is two-fold: to engage in respectful conversations about Brexit and to gather signatures for the People’s Vote petition. We use our handy Brexitometer which is a simple visual tool – a survey with five questions. It’s a fun and easy way to start conversations. We hand out leaflets and promote our events. We provide blank postcards so that residents can send messages to their MPs.

Conversations on the ground help us keep our finger on the pulse of public opinion which does seem to be shifting in favour of a People’s Vote. No matter how they voted, most people now agree that the government is making a mess of the Brexit negotiations. We discuss issues of concern, from immigration to the status of EU citizens living in the UK, and the democratic process.

We’re extremely grateful to everyone who helps out at our street stalls in Bath and further afield. Please keep an eye on our Facebook Group for upcoming locations. Or email bathforeurope@gmail.com to get in touch and find out how you can get involved.
